Piracy isn’t THAT bad and they know it

I received a very pleasant mail today. My inbox is usually full of stupid cease & desist messages from various antipiracy organizations, but it’s mails like this one which make you happy. It’s good to see that some people realize that internet piracy isn’t just evil…

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Eric D. Wilkinson and I am the producer of a small independent film called “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth” (our review).

I am sending you this email after realizing that our website has had nearly 23,000 hits in the last 12 days, much of it coming from your website. In addition, our trailer, both on the www.manfromearth.com site and other sites like YouTube, MySpace and AOL has been watched nearly 20,000 times AND what’s most impressive is our ranking on IMDb went from being the 11,235th most popular movie, to the 5th most popular movie in 2 weeks (we are also the #1 independent film on IMDb & the #1 science fiction film on IMDb). How did this all happen? Two words: Torrent / File Sharing sites (well, four words and a slash).

More specifically, RLSLOG.net. Our independent movie had next to no advertising budget and very little going for it until somebody ripped one of the DVD screeners and put the movie online for all to download. After that happened, people were watching it and started posting mostly all positive reviews on IMDb, Amazon and other places. Most of the feedback from everyone who has downloaded “The Man From Earth” has been overwhelmingly positive. People like our movie and are talking about it, all thanks to piracy on the net!

Am I upset… surprisingly no. Thanks to everyone who has downloaded this torrrent and watched the film, our awareness level is through the roof. For that I say, “THANK YOU”!

What you guys have done here is nothing short of amazing. In the future, I will not complain about file sharing. YOU HAVE HELPED PUT THIS LITTLE MOVIE ON THE MAP!!!! When I make my next picture, I just may upload the movie on the net myself!

This guy really deserves support from the file shareing community! You can support producers of The Man From Earth by buying the retail DVD, which should be available in the US stores from tomorrow.

Update: Proof for the non believers:

With so many scams on the internet these days it is not entirely surprising that some may jump to conclusions about the legitimacy of this whole ordeal. Well for one I can tell you he does indeed check out as legitimate. Here are some reasons:

  1. his comment IP matches his comcast ISP when a whois query is initiated
  2. his email is the same on his myspace page and he references in his rlslog comments
  3. he recently added more proof with an image of himself with the rlslog.net website

Recently his new myspace message confirms. Also the Director, Richard Schenkman gives his backup that both of the men have “discussed the matter quite extensively before reaching out to the download community.” But their whole idea behind ‘going public’ was to “pull a Radiohead… to reach out to the online community and say, “If you downloaded this movie and liked it, please buy the DVD; and if you can’t buy the DVD where you live, please send us some money.”

Eric: Here’s is a picture I took of myself five minutes ago in front of my computer screen while logged into rlslog.net.

Most of those indiependent artists, regardless the field they participate in, have nothing to fear. On the contrary…they put their name and work into anyone’s awareness.

Even Radiohead understood this simple fact. They managed to earn a fortune just by “selling” 160Kbps files, before their cd even appeared on the selfs. That way they promoted their work and gained hundreds of pounds as well.

But thanks to piracy ive come in contact with alot of music i wouldnt know otherwise.

I’ve been telling people that for years. Nice to see some proof. File sharing creates a buzz.I find myself speaking of movies I watch at work and find out they go see them at the theatre over the weekend. Word of mouth advertisement in it’s purest form.

If you can se this, im very happy to read your mail since that shows the heart of the industry, to make movies! and for people to se them, ofcrs you want money for your work and you should, i hope people will buy the retail DVD so that you will be able to create your next movie soon.

That is what piracy is all about, id be more then happy to buy your dvd just for the support, we need more people like you in the movie buisness that realizes the truth.

Thanks and i will download this movie first to se what its all about :)

This is really good news. Being an actor I have quite a few friends who are in small budget movies that are of a good quality, and I have been telling them that they should stick them on sites like this to gain interest. I will continue to do so!

why doesnt every movie producer show some paypal account in his movie, so that people who liked it and downloaded it can give them some money? fighting piracy is useless, but using it for good purposes will bring you further

    Io Martin.
Glad you posted it gives us a warm cozy feeling.
Maybe you should “bump” this topic when the DVD hits the stores.

Love to hear from the “little people” that instead of whining
from the profit they lost, glee on the attention they got.

Maybe if Hollywood didin’t spend millions in exploding cars,
insane paychecks an all-round spending frenzy in a movies’
    production, they probably profitted more…

This is funny .Guy have absolutely right .
But what he ACTUALY GET from piracy ?

Like he said “our awareness level is through the roof”.Nothing about MONEY people .So this guy who is “My name is Eric D. Wilkinson and I am the producer of a small independent film ” said he will make another movie and put it himself over internet ?

This is FUNNY .How many people he think he will invest into his new movie ? No matter how good it is .Put it over internet aka GIVE IT for free and no money will be made .

Or u guys think that radiohead receipt is universal apply ?Radiohead WHERE ALREADY FAMOUS .If u put your mp3 over internet and ask people to give u money how much u think u will make ? NOTHING .

So u will be forced to wake up in the morning and go to WORK quiting making GOOD MUSIC .Why ? All because basicaly u need to pay bills .Eat put gas into your car and not the less pay for internet bill .

Good luck to all producers who decide to “give/sell” their content over internet .

Don’t get me wrong, but i think that peple who produces movies like “The Man From Earth”, can afford write things like this. I very appreciate such kind of gesture, but its only because its small budget movie..
Huge studios and producers can not affort support this website and similar sites, because they will be immediately go bankrupt and there would by nothing for us to download. And thats why we’ll be alwas the bad guys. :) Becouse we’re breaking the chain. We download it, they have less money, and than they’ll stop producing Heroes! It sad, but i afraid also the a truth
But after all it’s nice to read it..

i can’t avoid having a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, the industry wants to fight against us so badly they forgot that maybe if they thought of some solution both sides could win…

for example I wouldn’t mind donate or pay for something that i enjoyed instead of having to pay to have it or to watch it and risk wasting money

i didn’t saw the movie, but i’m definitely going to do it now

All users here need to be careful of their statistical analysis and illusory correlations when interpreting findings. I see Mr. X consistently referring to that study that shows more purchases of cd’s “supposedly associated with more frequent downloading” – but what you all must realize is that this is a self-fulfilling argument b/c the ppl that love music in the first place are the ones exhibiting high frequencies in both variables.

Those findings show jack in the way of promoting positives of piracy – there may be other findings but I’m just saying that particular study is flawed.

Even without the support of said director to your site I think that rlslog is a great site nevertheless.

But in no intention of bursting your bubble or anything. Are you sure that the said REAL director sent you this email? Are you sure its actually Eric D. Wilkinson himself and NOT some internet kiddy PRANK or something?

Well I do hope its not but you can never be too careful in the “tubes” these days with all the scams and pranks.

However if said director was genuinely thankful then enough has been said.

    November 13th, 2007 | 16:04

That is brilliant..I thoughally enjoyed the movie thats to this link.

It makes a change to see this and of course some makers of films can see the positive reaction to their work and again putting them on the map because a lot more people have watched in and talked about it.

Not all films can afford great advertising not all films are that good to start with..this small film was really good and thought provoking.

Thanks for the link to that and I now am on a quest to find other works by the writer and director..isnt that the way this works….?

Who knows, they might like it too and want it in their dvd collection. yeah, and #54 ninja, you sound stupid with your car examples, and at the end it just didn’t make sense, just like telling a joke with no punch line. Perhaps other producers should take ‘Erics’ lead here and realise that a good movie can be made on a small budget. Also with less overheads more profit can be made, even when torrents are available of the movies.

Hats off to you Eric for taking the time to write a letter to show your approval. I have downloaded the movie but haven’t got around to watching it yet. I may just have to put it off and buy the DVD when it is available in the U.K.

I think its real. He probably saw the IMDB jump and googled his movie and found most hits pointing to this site and similar sites. Plus he can see where the traffic to his site is coming from.

Tv networks are offering their shows online, Bionic woman you could watch the episode online before it even airs. Movies will soon be straight to download.

That director’s email is a double-edged sword that could fall either way for him. If he continues to “support” the moralism of piracy (ie don’t give the creators a dime of your money), he might not even get to make any next movie, I’m pretty sure he’s going to have major problems getting funders with such kind of statements. But if all he’s ever aspiring for is making indie movies with next to no budget, perhaps he’ll succeed.

come on, guys, let’s not start fooling ourselves here – we’re not the ‘good guys’, we’re getting loads of stuff for free and have no intention whatsoever of doing good deeds by being here

there are certain cases where being on rlslog translates as fantastic advertising and promotion for a product, and this director guy’s shrewd response will only help that

but let’s put this in perspective a bit and PLEASE cut out all this hypocriticial warm n fuzzy bs

Letoll – You seem to be fixated on the £$£$£$£$ of the matter, and completely ignore the crux of the whole argument against the music/film industries.

The industries themselves have absolutely nothing to do with making great films or music, but about copyright ownership, and distribution. It’s true, everyone has to work, and movies themselves are not free to make, whether you are an independent filmmaker, or a Hollywood ‘blockbuster by the numbers’ director. However, only the most vapid and soulless music & film releases are the ones where it’s all about the money. Filmmakers & musicians who truly love what they’re doing are only focussed on getting their film seen or their music heard by as many people as possible. Anything else is (literally) immaterial.

I’ll gladly support this guy when the film comes out on DVD

I for one, and many of my friends, have purchased software after testing the “free” version. What a fantastic story!
I’ve never heard of this movie before, and have never seen it running in the cinema or for sale on DVD here in Norway. But after searching the movie’s title in Norwegian sites only, I found a forum thread where people discuss it (started the day it was posted here on RLSLOG!!), and not surprisingly, every one of the posters think it’s a beautiful and fantastic movie, and recommends others to watch it.

I have yet to see this movie, but since I haven’t seen it available in Norway, I’ll download it and watch it on Friday. As good as this movie sounds, I think it would be a success on commercial cinemas and DVD if it was advertised better.

Congratulations & thanks, both to everyone involved with the film, and to RLSLOG!

I was one of the people who downloaded and watched this movie, and afterwards went to the website as well. I thought it was a very clever movie with an interesting premise and some subtle acting. Kudos to the producer for having written such a letter to rlslog. Funny thing is, he is aware of the phenomenon!! Most producers either underestimate or overestimate the effect of piracy (Prince!).

That said, i’ll never be able to pay the producer for this movie. I am in India, and only the most brainless and action oriented foreign movies are brought to screen by distributors here. I’m glad i’m a pirate :)

  120. Richard Schenkman
    November 13th, 2007 | 19:04

This thread is fascinating to read… I’m jumping in here because several people have questioned whether a) the posting from Eric Wilkinson is genuine (that is, genuinely from the same guy who produced the movie) and b) is he putting up some kind of scam, asking for money via a PayPal account.

My name is Richard Schenkman, and I directed the movie, as well as co-producing it with Eric. I can assure you that the Eric who made the posting is my partner. I can also tell you that we discussed the matter quite extensively before reaching out to the download community.

Our feeling is simply this: while it’s lovely to be the subject of all sorts of online buzz, it sure didn’t do much to help “Snakes on a Plane”. The fact is that we put a lot of our own money into this movie, and convinced a number of friends and family to do the same. Despite a US Domestic DVD deal, we are nowhere near breakeven on the movie. Below 50%, if you want to know the truth.

It seems that more than 2000 people have downloaded the film, and the vast majority (I’d say 85-90%) seem to like or love the movie.

Most of these people live outside the US, and so the DVD is not officially for sale in their country, and frankly we have no idea when it will be. Same goes for any sort of TV sale.

So we had the idea (truth be told, my wife had the idea) to pull a Radiohead… to reach out to the online community and say, “If you downloaded this movie and liked it, please buy the DVD; and if you can’t buy the DVD where you live, please send us some money.”

It seems only fair, and I can tell you, as an independent filmmaker, that the only way we can make MORE interesting, different, intelligent movies is if we don’t lose our shirts on this one!

thanks very much… and here’s the email address if you feel like sending in your offering via PayPal: [email protected].

Here’s your proof I am Eric D. Wilkinson:

Its a link to the official Man From Earth MySpace page / Blog. I put up a photo of me taken 6 months ago and right below it, a photo of me taken in front of my computer screen logged into rlslog.net.

Its Eric D. Wilkinson! Producer – The Man From Earth!

  124. kale
    November 13th, 2007 | 19:18

I’d say that’s proof right there!

Kudos to Eric and Richard (if you don’t mind me calling you that) for taking this step. It’d would’ve been understandable if you’d just got pissed off that your blood, sweat and tears was out there for free on the net.

Truth is I’d never heard of, and being in the UK was never likely to ever hear of your movie. Now I have, I’m downloading and I will send you a few bucks. That is money you’d never have seen from me otherwise as small movies such as yours have a hard time getting your name heard.

If the movie is any good, and the premise is right up my alley so I’m hopeful, then the old “tell 10 friends” word of mouth will be in effect. I’m only too happy to spread the word about a good little movie, made by guys who recognise the potential of filesharing rather than taking a Draconian approach, and deserve to be rewarded with the chance to make more movies in future.

Hope to see more Wilkinson/Schenkman productions soon. On the big screen, as well as on rlslog ;)

great for small film companies to get attention because they have nothing to lose. Small software companies have a much bigger problem with piracy stealing their income. It’s called piracy for a reason.

I used to be all for downloading everything until my cousin’s company had to start putting ad-ware in their software just to cover the cost of development, thanks to people like us (me included :) )

  127. Milo
    November 13th, 2007 | 19:25

First of all, piracy isn’t the reason his film got noticed. It was advertisement. More specifically: adverts by rlslog.net. You basically gave him free advertisement on a site that has many visitors. So why the “piracy isn’t THAT bad”? Piracy has nothing to do with it, other than you are one.

its not piracy thats the problem, the problem is the big fat profit making companies who have created the system where by if they dont get involved your movie probably wont stand a chance. i say change the whole system and get rid of the fat greedy middlemen who are price fixing and basically taking us all for a ride and overcharging us for our dvds and games. me personally will not buy a game until iv downloaded it and really like it, 95% of the games iv downloaded i wouldent have bought anyway, even at half the price.

    Look guys IT’S REAL!!!!!!!!!

Why don’t any of you actually check for yourselves before calling people scammers?

Go to http://www.themanfromearth.com, from there navigate to the various other sites that are used to promote this, there’s even a “Myspace” page where all of the details are.

If you all continue to act so stupidly and irresponsibly in the face of such brave and innovative actions by Eric and Richard, who have been the only movie industry representatives who have actually given us WHAT WE HAVE BEEN BIATCHING ABOUT.. then quite frankly this bold experiment will be doomed to fail, and you will be unable to blame ANYONE but yourselves.

Don’t forget that when this hits the cinemas and stores people will read IMDB, see all the comments and rating and go and see it, when without all our comments and ratings they maybe wouldn’t have gone, so extra revenue will be made because of us.

@141: There is nothing wrong with being suspicious about an individual who posts a request to send him money to a PayPal account and then gives his PayPal address. If you have any brains at all you are very careful when it comes to sending your money to people who you’ve never met and have no idea if they are legit.

The “proofs” all came afterwards (and may still be a clever ruse), so it’s just natural to question any posters identity. ;) I bet that if Eric D. Wilkinson had made the picture with him being on rslog first, nobody would have called him a scammer (though some may still find it weired that the producer asks to send “him” the money instead of an (semi-)official account).

This is by far one of the best movies this year. I downloaded it, watched it and enjoyed it. I won’t buy it, because I don’t have any use for a redundant DVD case and a disc. I don’t even have a DVD player.

Excuse me for being paranoid about giving my money away, but I share Markstars skepticism about the validity of this donation bid. That said I will consider donating some eventually (Not today) because the producers / crew etc deserve compensation for their efforts and incentive to keep making more movies.

After reading this I’m going to download this and if I like it I’m gonna send some money to the creators! I’m from Europe and I don’t know if the DVD ever comes here. Piracy isn’t bad after all some people would say now. But honestly I think that piracy has NOT been the problem ever, I mean it doesn’t hurt the sales at all! Look at hollywood movies – if the movie is good then the sales are good as well. The only important thing here is the quality of the product.

I love this thread! What a fascinating online conversation.

To answer the questions about money:

The movie cost money to make. We paid the crew, we rented equipment, we paid the actors, bought food, etc etc. While it’s true that EVERYBODY involved in the movie worked for pennie on the dollar, it still added up to quite a lot of money (just a piece of HD mastering tape, for example, costs over $200 to buy; a portable bathroom costs $1500 a week to rent).

Thanks to the advance from Starz/Anchor Bay, we recouped just under 50% of the cost of the film. That leaves us with quite a large amount to go.

If you send money to the PayPal account, it goes into our general account, from which we make payments to investors, actors, and crew members — all of whom have a piece of the movie!

I hope that answers the question—

This is a rather fortunate instance by which I’m happy for the producers of that film, but you guys have to understand that most people who come to rlslog are not going to buy anything after they “obtain” it. I know there’s a lot of kids reading this site and I hope that they understand that when they grow up, they should pay for things in order to keep the market going. Without the dollars from non-pirates, we wouldn’t be getting all this free entertainment being churned out and distributed via the pirate networks. So, remember to go to the cinemas, buy a software you can’t do without, and keep doing your part with whatever money you can spare to keep the market going.

So ONE e-mail from a unknown and very small producer means that piracy isn’t bad at all…right… Too bad thousands of them complain about it and give money to organisations like the RIAA, that sort of negates your reasoning doesn’t it. Martin, your ignorance amazes me again. When a thousands of these people come knocking on your door saying “thank you” and making the same statement, then you have enough ‘data’ to support that piracy helps to sell movies/music/programs/games.

If you want to believe in UFO’s you’ll eventually start seeing them.

I also believe this have potential to be a TV series for a few seasons, get this movie some more advertising, and it will go far, I know for sure if i see it anywhere here in norway i will pick it up, Congratulations Eric D.

    They lost a fortune mate!!

Grr. You can’t use a “less than” sign. Last try:
The average person has less spending power (I hope that’s the right word) than 20 years ago. Things have gotten a lot more expansive but the income has not risen by the same factor. Therefore, things like DVDs, visits to movie theaters or swimming pools, etc. are the first things to cut back on.

Should you pay for things? Definitely! Is downloading a movie stealing? No.
Does one letter from a producer make P2P a good thing? No.
Does the studios constant whining about lost income make piracy bad? No!
Does the fact that millions of people use P2P and this accounts for about 90% of all web traffic say something about the feasibility of the entertainment business’ business model? I think so. :)

It’s a good movie. It isn’t for those who are into non-thinking movies like Transformers or Saw1-4. It’s a no-budget movie that tells quite litterally a story of someone’s life if they didn’t die. Even the use of flashbacks were not needed.

I think it’s great that this producer got an adrenalin shot from the download community even if it was not a legit source. I’d like to think his career will jump into notoriety from this but not come back to bite us on the 4ss when the big times come ala Metallica, who rose up from demo tapes and handouts to assaulting their fans who downloaded their music later in career life.

Good for you Eric. I want to see more from you even if it means going to a theater to see it the way all movies should be enjoyed.

I think some people may be losing sight of what the file sharing community is all about. Hasnt it always been about sharing digital media, whether it is music, movies or software, with other users who don\’t have that media yet?

Is this shared media supposed to be made available with the obligation that if you like it, then you pay for it? If so, then whole idea of file sharing just becomes a cheaper distribution system for the digital media creators.

If I have to pay for the media whether I acquire it from a store or I acquire it online, then that would seriously decrease the popularity of file sharing.

But Lee Welton, having said that, at some point the bottom simply falls out. If people can’t make their money back, they can’t continue to fund independent films, and then the only material available will either be home-made YouTube clips or “Transformers III”. It’s only right to step up and support artists, if you possibly can.

In the case of musical artists, while you may download their music, you can still buy tickets to see them live — the “free” download supports the other part of their business (although of course they’d like to sell some CD’s, too).

But with a movie, there are the theatrical rights, the video rights, the digital rights, and the TV rights, and that’s about it. Small films don’t tend to get theatrical releases, or sell to TV, so that leaves video and digital. And nobody seems to know yet how to make money from digital.

I don’t believe in filing lawsuits all over the place, but there has to be some middle ground. Downloaders can’t take the attitude that “it should all be free” because then how does it get made? I mean, really! People work for a living, even writers, directors, and actors. Sure, it’s fun, challenging work, but if it’s how you expect to make your living, then you need to be paid for your work. That’s what the Writers Guild of America strik is all about. The studios want to sell, and re-sell, and re-sell artists’ work and never pay for it again, and the artists are saying, “No, that’s not fair.”

I don’t mean to rant. I’m just saying, there has to be a middle ground. That’s why we’ve come forward and said, “Okay, fair enough, you downloaded the movie. If you liked it, please either buy our DVD or send us some money.” A number of people have indeed already sent in a respectable amount of money and we are honored and touched by this display.

  208. Someone Noone
    November 14th, 2007 | 02:04

Downloading content from the ‘net and having the option to pay for it is the same as buying something that is fully returnable and refundable regardless of how much it has been used.

I have bought each and every piece of art (music, movies, even some prints of pictures) and software that deeply impressed me and/or had significant usefulness. I will continue doing so because I feel good about doing so. AND I like to have things in their original, intended format and quality, because it’s an important part of the overall entity/creation in question.

I believe it is only fair for all intellectual properties to be made *freely* available like this, with profits stemming from people’s appreciation (in form of ca$h).

You might wonder what will happen to those being insufficiently appreciated both in thought and money…
Well, the governments should exert funds for the development and creation of art and utility software. Just take all that money going into weapons R&D and use it for something good and actually useful! We have quite enough of efficient kill methods, techniques and means as it is now…

Its the year 1241, mid europe.
In this time, artists…or…lets call them…”bards” are traveling arount with Instruments and other equippment, trying to amuse the normal townspeople and hope to get some coins for the next meal. All was fine, every artist got what he deserves, depending on the quality & concept of his work.

    Some year around 2000~:
Something went terrible wrong. Artists and the Industry behind them are trying to sell everything they make. Quality is not a point that is choosen & rated by the people with the amount they pay. They have to pay even if they dont get what they wanted(Bad movie, concert canceled or changed, Software with tons of bugs or just not usable&unstable, music that is no music,…). Thanx to the great efforts of big marketing companys, people are bombarde with great commercials, advertising prints and other ways of getting attention for a bad product.

    It is now 2007:
IMHO “That’s one small step for man… one… giant leap for mankind.” that Eric D. Wilkinson & Richard Schenkman are doing. I dont remember any situation like this in the history of the Internet. They say it like the nice bards in tights back in 1241, “Pay what you want, just pay a little for listening”.

Eric D. Wilkinson & Richard Schenkman, I wish you the best going for this movie and hope to “see” you soon again.

    @Apollo Gist

The problem with this method of gaining popularity and publicity is that it is not a sustainable business model. If producers were to release their productions to the internet before theatrical releases, they would risk losing large parts of their potential audience.

And as Hollywood has said for some time now, a large part of the movie going experience is to see the movie on the big screen. Downloading a movie and watching it on a PC screen isnt even close.

  224. Jingle Jangle
    November 14th, 2007 | 04:46

Sorry to “kill the vibe”, but I had to inject some reality into this love-fest. The reason rlslog.net is run is to MAKE MONEY. You make money from the various ads here, and no, I don’t buy the fact that the ads are “just here to pay for the server”. Unless you’re running multiple supercomputer-type servers, you’re easily making more money than your costs based on your traffic and the types of ads you serve here.

    @Other whiners

Let’s look at the facts. This guy loves the publicity his movie is getting, but he’s just being short sighted. Sure, this movie might get lots of cred and even some sales, but when he next goes to make a big-buck picture to actually earn some decent money, he’ll be kicking himself for encouraging all of us for downloading his stuff.

If I paid for all the movies I’ve downloaded I’d be broke. So would most of you. We download movies because we don’t wanna pay for them not because we’re “trying before we buy”. Don’t give me that BS.

Giving stuff away for free is not a longterm business model, and if that reality upsets some people then wind me up and call me Jesus, but I just hate to see so much crap flying around in these comments… let’s call a spade a spade, OK>??

@212 (Trell): I had already accepted this as the real deal with my first post (#136) and went to PayPal at this point. If you wrote the first paragraph in regards to #196, you should probably also read the comments that I was reacting to. My point was not that I didn’t believe them, it was that I could understand someone’s skepticism if only a name and a PayPal account is supplied (which it was when some people used words like “scammers” etc and before Eric posted a link to his myspace blog).

Anyways, I decided to give $4 – I think that’s fair considering that I still hope to purchase the DVD when it’s available here (and I usually wait until the prices have dropped a little so I rarely end up spending more than $14).

to R4inx post #242 — I wish I knew what the heck you were talking about, with the downloading, “wrap a free torrent client together”… sorry! This is Greek to me. But they sound like very exciting ideas. Perhaps at some point you or someone else can explain to us exactly what you mean and/or how to execute it and we can look into that. We’d probably have to upgrade our web site, though.

This is been done before, so i don’t get all the fuzz about it here, but it’s still awesome moviemakers do this. I hope more and more will use this as a channel to promote their work. It would be nice to see this kind of ‘market’ making the now-existing market disappear because the honesty system is simply better. People will pay less, but more people will buy and the money will go to the people who deserve it, not the big shots.

    Good luck on future projects:)
Enjoyed the movie, will consider buying it:)

I’d go over to walmart and buy it but I don’t possess any money to do that with. My music isn’t selling…I do the “bard” thing, give it away, hope for donations after. Only, I’m not getting any donations and the coffee house I play at doesn’t pay except in free drinks.

Anyhow, when you’re done giving Eric your donations for his film … jump on over and listen to free music, read free stories, download or request any songs and I’ll give them to you for free.

And thar you go. You can donate if you like, or don’t. Wee jumping on the “Radiohead” bandwagon (or rather not because I’ve been doing this for the last three years :p)

This article made my day. I’m glad to see that even the people behind the products are finally realizing what downloading their products really does for them.
I live in a small country and watch a lot of movies and listen to a lot of music, but the information that i get from the papers and other media are only about the i.e. top ten music albums (like that sad little thing called Britney) and only about the most watched movies. So far i have found at least 50 music albums that nobody hasn’t even heard of but like me when i introduced them to my friends aswell they also fell in love with them and ordered them. Same goes for the movies. The mass movies don’t need our support if they have hundreds of millions to spend on a movie wich the public will be viewing in the theaters only because the special effects.

Anyway… i hate the word pirate and piracy. I associate it with the cheap copyed stuff that are being sold on the black market in countries like thailand and russia. Piracy to me is making money with other peoples products (if you download a movie and sell it to someone then this applies to you aswell). While most of us just download stuff for ourselves and have not made a dime with these on the contratry we have just gave the products more publicity -> more buying customers.

    Richard and Eric,

When you release your next movie put a torrent link and a paypal link on the site and spread the word like this and you will have another popular movie. You said that getting tv rights is difficult, well after all the reviews, good comments and sales this should now be easier.

Hopefully if this works, and you do make money off it, another small company can get a good film out there using the same method and we may be seeing the future model of film distribution starting for a lot of Indie films. Of course the film still has to be good

    Good Luck

A film producer creates the conditions for making movies. The producer initiates, coordinates, supervises and controls matters such as fundraising, hiring key personnel, and arranging for distributors. The producer is involved throughout all phases of the filmmaking process from development to completion of a project.

An executive producer of a motion picture is typically a producer who is sometimes involved in creative or technical aspects of production. This person generally handles business issues, and may also be a financier of a film.

Whatever the case may be for this guy, it doesn’t matter. This whole ordeal only strengthens the fact that p2p downloading of the movie made it popular and is now looking like the film will be successful.

Three cheers for RLSLOG and the torrent network!

    November 14th, 2007 | 18:53

Hello…. It’s now 9:51am in Los Angeles. Here’s an update:

Yesterday’s first-day DVD numbers were good. Not a grand-slam, but hardly a failure. Apparently they were considered good-to-very-good for a small science fiction movie without big stars or a pre-sold title.

But the only way we can hang on in stores through the all-important holiday season is if people really head out and buy the DVD this week.

So if anyone is considering buying the DVD…now’s the time! Wal-Mart stores (NOT online!) and Circuit City probably have the best prices brick-and-mortar, and Amazon has the best price online. And by the way — you might as well find the cheapest price you can, because any future return to us (the filmmakers) is only based on the wholesale price anyhow.

As for PayPal… more than 22 people from all over the world made payments in the first few hours, ranging from just a few US dollars to over one hundred! It’s a very impressive start, and we appreciate the response very much, both as a statement of support, and as a practical matter of additional income.

    So, what’s next?

Well, if you want to support the film (and filmmakers like us), we’d love for you to buy the DVD (heck, buy two and give one to your mom)… and of course it’d be teriffic if people who can’t buy the DVD send a few dollars to the PayPal address… but also very important is to keep the IMDB postings coming. If people keep visiting the movie’s IMDB page and making posts, we’ll stay in their MovieMeter top ten, which does bring a lot of attention to the film. If we can stay in the top ten, or even move up from #6, the mainstream press might start paying attention to the film, and things could really open up for us.

In fact, if any of you have contacts in the mainstream press, please let them know about this film and this story. This goes for Americans a well as those who live outside the US. We want this movie to come out in every country!

Once again, thank you so much for your ongoing support. Eric and I appreciate it so, so much.

    Concerning the rating at http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0756683
This is what my kind of people say about it:

“omg WhAT AN AWSOME FILME, just watched it and it is one of few movies that made me enter another reality. The end is dolorous and painfull but still a great end

“I watched this movie last night and it was awsome! This proves that you can make a great movie without thousands of explosions and hot chicks running around.

Another movie that is similar and also awsome is K-PAX.

This movie is for sure one i will grabb an original copy of..

    @222 (1241 A.D.)

You made the best post on here. Very entertaining. I must say, I completely agree. We as consumers have to take a blind leap of faith when it comes to music, movies and books. Entertainment is the one industry where NO ONE is guaranteed satisfaction. Money is tight for a lot of people these days, and after you’ve been burned so many times by paying for mediocre (or worse) product you feel somewhat justified in downloading. I, as many on here do, use downloading as a way to “try before you buy.” If I like something I show my support by purchasing a DVD, going to a concert, buying the t-shirt or whatever. What I pay should match my enjoyment level. Why do they charge $19.99 for Citizen Kane and the same for a crapfest like Hot Rod? Would you pay $45,000 for a Kia? Hell no. For that money I better have a three-point star in a circle on my hood.

I actually downloaded this and watched it a week ago, usually, I dont watch movies where people talk, yes only talk, for 90 minutes but this was very do-able.

My understanding is that the film is still All Rights Reserved so it is illegal for me to download and share it regardless of how the producer or director feels.

Is there an official notice giving permission to download and share? How about releasing the movie under a CC license if sharing is what is desired?

Sounds like a great movie. I hope I see it one day.

  265. FEI
    November 16th, 2007 | 04:23

YES! That’s what file sharing is for, sharing with the community and friends. Not Stealing!

If I see a movie I download that I like, I’ll recommend my friends to go watch it in the cinema or I’ll go watch it again in the cinema, and when the DVD is out, I’ll go buy the DVD to keep in my collection. I’ll also give it a good review on the internet.

For those who download and don’t go buy the DVD, we’ll have to forgive them because not everyone can afford everything they want!

For those who download and convert to DVDs to sell, to make a profit! Those real pirates out there… then that is STEALING! And sometimes the profit from pirating DVDs goes to organised crime such as terrorism, human trafficking, and planning larger scams!

Do not buy pirated DVDs, you indirectly sponsor organised crime!

The law should put a blind eye on downloads as it really indirectly push the market. But should hit hard on those who make a profit out of it.

I have always been preaching this:

Pirated DVDs = Guilty! Stealing! DO NOT BUY!
BT Downloads = Not Guilty! Forgive!

  266. rattack15
    November 16th, 2007 | 17:56

    November 17th, 2007 | 02:40

Unlike a lot of people here, I don’t think sharing your movie on the web gets you more attention and positive reviews all by itself.
The reason why this is working so well for them on imdb is not “filesharing”, it’s the quality of the movie.

We, the so called “pirates”, only gave this movie a chance in todays world where adverts tells you what you should like or dislike.
We’re not thieves in the first place, we’re only bored of paying for something we don’t even like. Of course there will always be people wanting to download for free and who will never pay, but be honest, that does not make “lost sales”. They would rather not watch it than pay.

But there are also a lot (and I mean *a lot*) of movie lovers who use filesharing because it provides them with an easy access to everything, fast, in the quality they want, without having to pay ten times for the same thing.
And without adding DRM to their movie, which is the way hollywood use to say to its customer “we don’t trust you, thieves”. We use filesharing because it’s more convenient, but we are all willing to pay for good products.

It may sounds good, but it’s also a trap: we are willing to pay for GOOD products. If we watch a movie and dislike it, we won’t pay.
Even worse from your point of view, if we watch a movie we dislike, we will slash it in the back. You’ve seen what a +++ rating on imdb can do, i let you imagine what a — rating would do.

In other word, it’s all good for the consummer who get better product (i use “product” since that also applies to music for exemple), with no big-drm-brother, it allows the creator to make money from us instead of fighting us and getting tons of reviews, but it also disallow him to make a cheap poor quality one that we can see a lot these day.

I would love to read reaction to this from either Eric or Richard, to see if they do understand the full implication of the “digital age”. An age where consummers get back the power to say what is good and what’s not. It worked like that in the past, but is today’s industry ready to go back to this model, with cost rising so much ?

Btw: I agree with the guy saying a torrent pack on your website would help a lot.
You wouldn’t have to upgrade anything: find a free-to-share bittorent client on the web (we thieves like to share for free ;) , find a good torrent on a public tracker (the pirate bay or mininova for exemples), and write a nice txt explaining to people how to pay a few bucks if they like it, and to feel free to comment.
Put all these things in a zip file. Give that zip on your website. You don’t host the movie, we the thieves do it for you :)
If you have any technical question about this you could ocntact the upper guys who proposed it, or the rlslog staff maybe for advice, or even me at bobbydoh-at-gmail-dot-com

But before you do any of this, you better check your legal rights to do so, because even if you own your movie, I’m afraid your contract with walmart, or theaters or whoever might disallow you to do so.

thats how viewing our media should be. first download it, then watch it and if you like it then buy the dvd, if you cant afford the dvd then send them as much as you can afford. it should be cheaper as your not paying anything for the packaging and nothing for importing it, so you cut out the middleman and thus make the product as affordable as possible.

piracy isnt killing the music, movie scene. its the greedy bast*rd profiteers who are ruining it.

  278. Alex
    November 19th, 2007 | 00:15

    @jack white

Totally agree! I also think this system should be expanded to restaurants. First, order your food, then eat it, and if you like it then buy it, if you cant afford the full meal, then just leave them as much as you can afford.

The greedy profiteers that run restaurants are ruining that scene for everyone.

Well, as a artist, I will mention that if I send ANYTHING
which I have createde, my PRIMARY goal is for people to
see what I have created, and share it, since the more people that see
my art I produce, the happier I will be. True there is a
financial downfall, but maybe this is the “electronic great depression”
where everyone on Earth is in a depression of some form.

Maybe artists will end up agreeing that they can have someone else
distribute their work. The major question is: (I am NOT a lawyer)
How about adding a extra fee (it can be small but pennies can make ppl wealthy)
to for users of ISP’s who mostly share with each other.
Something that the EFF proposed. (I trust the EFF more than the ACLU when it comes to technology
and “law” whatever this whole legal mess is.
Then again, as a artist I know if I go into a business where
I “sell” what I create i know beforehand that it’s not a good
business model to force something down people’s throats.
I say..Why has it become so difficult for ALL of us on Earth
to simply work TOGETHER, since we’re all on this planet together.
Maybe we could come up with solutions that are better than solutions that may be

Well, my humble opinon is that the ‘scene’ is of benefit to those who use it, and those that produce it, although ‘The Man’ would never admit this as he feels he is entitled to earn every last penny from other peoples creativity.
My view is that those that partake in the scene (Releasing, or Downloading) make a contribution to the art of others, my issue is when others sell it on, they are just as bad as ‘The Man’,

    Greetings and Salutations…

I know many of you who have seen “Man From Earth” are from some far away places. If you have a sec, head over to this IMDb thread:

And just tell us what country you are from and that you would support a DVD release in your country. That would really help.

We had a decent 1st 2 weeks of sales, not “Transformers” numbers, but pretty good for an indie release. The nice thing was that the numbers held up pretty well for week 2, which usually doesn’t happen.

Also, if you are in the US, J & R Music World (www.jr.com) has put “The Man From Earth” on sale for only $9.99! That’s the cheapest price yet. If you haven’t picked it up, that’s the place to go.

    Thanks again.

Well I sent a donation but only a small one $5. I wouldn’t give more unless I was getting a DVD Image and going to keep it. I viewed it more like me paying for a rental viewing. I’d certainly do they same for others like brick, if I could.

Form some of Eric D. Wilkinsons other comments I wonder if he realises that people who didn’t like the movie aren’t going to buy or donate, should they?.

A lot of people who downloaded probably ain’t even watched it yet and even more don’t know yet about the donate option.

I’m actually surprised that from certain Christian groups we haven’t seen more of a backlash, I thought they’d get to a certain point in the film and the placards would come out.

Sorry I should have added this in the earlier post. But I also paid for the recent radiohead internet release though I almost didn’t.

Like I imagine many people who downloaded I’ll also be buying the material off the shelf because of the extra videos and stuff.

So maybe other people figured they didn’t want to pay twice. I’m just saying I think if the material was only available via the web then I think more people would have contributed. In the end I decided it was important enough for me to show my support for the idea that I was willing to pay twice.

Thanks should be to the producers for such an open mind. There is no way I can order the DVD since it is in a different region code than the players over here play, but I saw the movie, and I sent them money on their website, an amount I thought was valid for the amount of interest I had in the movie. thats how it should be. welcome to the future!

This morning we received the wonderful news that “Jerome Bixby’s The Man From Earth” was nominated for “Best DVD Release” in the 34th Annual Saturn Awards (http://www.saturnawards.org/nominations.html).

We couldn’t be more pleased, nor feel more honored. One of our primary goals from the start of this project was to do right by Jerome Bixby’s legacy within the science fiction community, and this nomination, we feel, recognizes that effort.

Our thanks go to all the members of The Academy of Science Fiction Fantasy & Horror Films, especially the members of the DVD committee.

And to fans of the film… if you happen to KNOW anybody on the DVD committee, please let them know how much you like it!

    warmest greetings–

The attitude I see here of some people is pretty stupid, pirating a film on the theaters right now will not do anything positive for the company, this guy had free promotion, good for him, he did not have to money to promote it like the big films did, It did help this particular case, but did they stop to think that this guy needs every penny he can get from the film? hes not ritch so to him it makes a difference. I don’t see how it means that it applies to even 5% of the movies out right now.

Anyways I do see movies in the theater, sometimes even If I’ve seem them on pirated dvd’s, why? Because Theather kicks the ever living crap out of my pc or watching them in my house.

Also I find it a little disturbing that some people quickly go saying that “The Artist don’t do it for the money, its the company in charge of them”.. That’s the only reason 99% do it for, not for your enjoyment, if that was the case then their concert would be expensive enough just to cover their bills maintenance etc from the consert and not get a huge profit for themselves.

I actually started downloading only becuz every movie or CD i bought sucked and i was sick of wasting my money on crap. If i download and get something i like, i always go out and buy it.

If the industry wants to stop downloading they should start by putting out a better product. A lot of the stuff the industry releases is just to get people to buy it anyways with not enough emphasis on quality.

This is a rather old post… but I just watched the movie and googled it. I must say it is an awesome movie.

Regarding the topic of piracy, although it is “bad” that most of us download and thus not pay for the movie, it is also true that sometimes companies have no respect for the viewer/client/etc and not only in terms of movies but of video games, etc. I can’t count the times that, when I finish watching a downloaded movie, I think..” sigh.. I would feel really bad paying 15 AUD for such a #@%@#%”.

Fortunately this is the opposite..an extremely good movie..I will definitely buy the DVD and watch it at home with my family.

    Cheers to the producers/writers!!! Congrats

we had a speaker who is the head of anti piracy at disney corporation as well as other things, and he discussed how torrents and downloading are no longer their major concern, that the actual bootleg copies that enter the market are the major concern, the ones that are physical dvd's, he said that torrent users (from disney corps studies) hardly hurt their profits, most people who download movies would have never bought the dvd or went to the theaters to begin with or will buy the dvd anyways if they enjoyed the film, he seemed to be argueing that most of the time torrent users hardly harm their major profits, he showed charts of their film profits over the time period before any major downloading sources online till now and there were hardly changes in their losses, he was more woried about stoping bootleg dvd's by delaying film releases in countries that have not made video camera's illegal in theaters or countries that are known for large amounts of bootleg dvd's till they have made most of their release profits across the globe, thought it was interesting to hear that from the head of disney corps anti-piracy group

Well, congratulations to the film producer and cast and kudos to rlslog.net.

This is a rare yet fortunate outcome of piracy that benefits the smaller players out there that need to get noticed and is the exact opposite sentiment for mainstream film companies that lose a lot to piracy. I wonder if Mr. Wilkinson will still appreciate piracy once he goes mainstream.

I kinda understand where you are coming from but there is one major difference between your little independent movie and the big hollywood movies…they want to make shed loads of money and recoup the multi-millions they spend.

Don't get me wrong, I love to be able to download movies, music, games etc. and my reason for doing this is simple. I personaly would never pay to go see many of the movies or buy every game or CD on the store shelf. I have to be selective and this so called piracy helps me be selective and buy the things I really enjoy.

I think if they really clamped down on piracy it would hurt them more than they realise and they would see a drop in sales across the digital media industry, from cinema attendances to games, dvd and cd purchases. Espesically in the current economic climate we don't have bottomless pockets and have to be very selective on where our hard earned, over-taxed wages go.

  331. exever
    July 15th, 2009 | 17:52

    this is because:
    1) limited budget
    2) expected to earn nothing
    3) expected almost nobody to watch it

now go and tell "piracy aint that bad" to universal, fox, or paramount

  332. McVily
    July 29th, 2009 | 11:52

Well finally someone saw how stupid economy of today can be.

If all Movies/music/games enterprises would stop to invest their money in anti-piracy protections and advertising and act as this guy, they would probably earned more money than now cause of expenses cut-off that would be drastical.

Most of peoples have somewhere deep in their mind feel of obligation to pay fair price for product/service they use. However they are also feel revolt when trying to be ripped off by paying what they find unfair price.

Well he did great. Getting a nomination for a Saturn Award… without wasting 100 millions on publicity stunts?
There are now 2 shows on TV that just got there so much hype because of the Internet. Lost and FlashBack. Look at those series and see them on the first and what happened to them when the episodes just stacked the net. Millions where discussing it, millions where watching it and giving predictions. Lost had so much hype that the ABC website was crashing after each episode. And that couldn´t be only american people. Then the DVDS got out and they started to sell.
With flashback the same is happening. Even with good levels of people watching it on TV, the internet is a freeway for getting them publicity. The TV trailers where weak and just showed that “the world got sleepy for 237 minutes and hell break lose”. Well after the second episode, they got more people watching than Survivor…

I read this post long ago (probably the same day it was written) but didn’t really care for the movie cause I noticed that it was an independent movie and it didn’t have that many IMDB ratings.

I liked the description on the recent bluray post so I clicked the IMDB link and saw that it had lots of votes and a good 8.1 rating (i also rated it now, 10/10 :P ), so I decided to download it and watch it. I didn’t even remember this post. Anyway, I liked the movie so much that I decided to look it up on wikipedia which led me to the torrentfreak post about this post. And so here I am. :D

I think it is high time we separate the file sharing concept from the piracy concept. Piracy envolves making money out of the files and file sharing envolves, well, in a nut shell, sharing, with no money envolved. Therefore, file sharing is NOT piracy, and the file sharing community shold always make that clear for those who mix these two concepts.

Piracy is nt something to detest. If something makes money change hands, and keeps people occupied in productive pursuits, its all good for the economy anyways. Only that the rightful owner (producer) isnt receiving a share of the money. I think they could just as well throw in some ads and release all new movies after 30 days in the box office, via the internet. I will only be too happy to put up with some ads at the beginning and end of movies if it will make them legal. If I earned more, I will buy such DVDs frm legit sources, but those who are against so-called piracy can think of it as ‘cultural spread’ or ‘cultural imperalism’ for overseas markets – they are only spreading their words and their culture as far and wide as possible, and as long as the downloading/leeching happens by choice, and not by coercion or force, i dont see anything wrong.

Chiming in quite late, but it’s funny how if there was no monetary system in the world, this wouldn’t be an issue. People would make movies for the love and passion, not for the money. This thank you note from this guy shows this all too well. “Piracy” provides exposure, spreads the word. Piracy is only illegal because people aren’t getting their money at the top end.

  388. Marco
    November 7th, 2011 | 11:12

I have compleately stopped turning on the TV and watch shows by download only, main reason? Here in Australia, TV channels thing its a good thing to show preview parts of TV episodes, to “wet viewers appetite”, but what they do is a lot is

    a) show “key” parts, a LOT, meaning massive spoilers.
    b) show many parts near the end of the episode, so if you have seen the preview, you will put 2 and 2 togheter and guess the ending.

    December 3rd, 2011 | 08:05

A very good movie I downloaded it and gave it to all my friends. None of us plan to ever buy it. We hurt the media industry because we don’t buy any of it, we take it. We may be media thieves, but at least we don’t lie about it. Funny how most people here can’t admit that, they need to justify that what they do is not that bad or even good in some twisted way. No matter, eventually our actions will destroy the profit driven media industry. And then?..

    I use rlslog.net for a long time.

This is not the most significant proof that piracy has big advantages and does wonderful things for millions of people.

    The number one proof:

If you go to Freelancer.com, Elance.com, Guru.com and other freelance job sites alike, most jobs there require very expensive software, one that you must get to learn how to use it and then be able to provide products and services by utilizing it, and that takes time, and most times updating to the newest version of the expensive software, while still not making any money from freelance support. If the freelancers did not get pirated software to evolve, they would not, and they would not be able to provide freelance work.

At those sites above, millions of posted jobs there require freelancers with expensive software, but truth be said, most can not buy it and most will never buy it because it is too expensive, but the main reason is that they only get paid enough for freelance jobs for paying their day to day costs of life and family.

If people could not download pirated software, instead of millions of freelancers on those sites and thousands of great professionals in using the pirated software, well, it would be a big problem because they would not have any work, their families would starve, etc.

This concerns software, but lets get to the music and movie industry.

People that download music and movies from the internet, at least 85%, will never buy music nor movies in the first place, so if harsh laws are placed, the purpose can only be to raise profits for the main companies on those industries, however they know that they will not get higher profits and that it is impossible to stop the piracy. The real reason behind harsh laws is to stop a bit the development of the piracy, because if they do nothing, well, it would be really worst.

Music and movies are used to calm people all around the world, and that prevents people from robbing, killing, going to wars, etc, so when someone downloads music and movies from the web, trust me, they are doing it to help themselves get over their miserable lives, and in many cases, to prevent them from getting in bad vibes if they live in bad places full of drugs, gangs, mafia, etc.

The idiots behind laws related to piracy are in fact idiots, because the good resulting from piracy is far better than if piracy did not exist, because millions would be unemployed, there would be more killing, robbing, wars, more gang members, etc.

Think you idiot law makers… think!
